Conditions That Respond
What Conditions Respond to Non-Surgical Treatment?
Many conditions that are commonly treated with surgery can also be managed with conservative, non-surgical care. At The Chiropractic Doctors in Grand Rapids, we have helped patients avoid surgery for herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, chronic back and neck pain, sports injuries, and peripheral neuropathy. Dr. Phinney has over 35 years of experience identifying which patients are good candidates for non-surgical treatment.
Conservative care is also the first line of defense for many orthopedic surgeons, who often recommend patients try physical therapy and chiropractic before scheduling an operation. Our pain management protocols combine multiple therapies to address your condition from different angles, giving your body the best chance to heal on its own. Patients from Cascade, Kentwood, Forest Hills, Ada, Wyoming, and East Grand Rapids trust our office for honest, evidence-based recommendations.
The Case for Conservative Care
Why Choose Non-Surgical Treatment First?
Surgery carries inherent risks including infection, anesthesia complications, blood clots, nerve damage, and failed back surgery syndrome. Recovery can take weeks to months, requiring time off work and restricted activity. Many spinal surgeries also involve hardware (screws, rods, cages) that permanently limits spinal mobility. Non-surgical treatment avoids all of these risks while addressing the underlying problem through natural healing mechanisms.
Cost is another factor. Spinal surgery in Grand Rapids can run tens of thousands of dollars or more, even with insurance coverage. A non-surgical care plan at The Chiropractic Doctors is a fraction of that cost. And if conservative care resolves your symptoms, you have avoided an irreversible procedure. Dr. Phinney always recommends exhausting non-surgical options before considering surgery.
Your Evaluation
How We Evaluate Your Candidacy for Non-Surgical Care
Every patient starts with a comprehensive evaluation at our Grand Rapids office on 28th Street SE. Dr. Phinney, Dr. Bailey, or Dr. Papes will review your health history, examine your spine and affected areas, perform neurological and orthopedic tests, and review any existing imaging (MRI, CT, x-ray). If additional imaging is needed, we can take digital x-rays in-house.
Based on this evaluation, your doctor will give you an honest assessment of whether non-surgical treatment is likely to help your condition. If we believe conservative care is appropriate, we will outline the specific therapies, expected timeline, and realistic outcomes. If your condition requires surgical intervention, we will tell you that directly and help coordinate a referral. Our $47 new patient consultation is the first step. Call (616) 432-3103 to schedule.
Common Questions
Non-Surgical Treatment FAQ
Is non-surgical treatment as effective as surgery?
For many spinal and musculoskeletal conditions, non-surgical treatment produces comparable outcomes without the risks, recovery time, or cost of surgery. Dr. Phinney evaluates each patient individually to determine whether conservative care is appropriate for your specific condition.
How long does non-surgical treatment take to work?
Many patients notice improvement within the first few visits. A typical care plan at The Chiropractic Doctors involves two to three visits per week for four to twelve weeks, depending on the condition. Dr. Phinney tracks your progress and adjusts the plan based on how your body responds.
What if non-surgical treatment does not work for me?
If you are not improving after a reasonable trial of conservative care, Dr. Phinney will discuss next steps with you honestly. In some cases, a surgical consultation may be appropriate. Our goal is always to exhaust non-surgical options first, but we will never hold you back from care that you need.
