The Science
How Does Class IV Laser Therapy Work?
Class IV laser therapy uses specific wavelengths of light, typically in the 800nm to 980nm range, to penetrate deep into muscle, tendon, ligament, and nerve tissue. When the light energy reaches damaged cells, it stimulates the mitochondria to produce more adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the fuel cells use for repair and regeneration. This process, called photobiomodulation, increases blood flow to the treatment area, reduces inflammation, and accelerates healing at the cellular level.
Unlike Class III cold lasers, which operate at lower power and only reach surface tissue, Class IV lasers deliver enough energy to treat deep structures. That makes them effective for conditions like disc injuries, deep joint inflammation, peripheral neuropathy, and post-surgical healing. At The Chiropractic Doctors in Grand Rapids, we use Class IV laser therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that may also include chiropractic adjustments and spinal decompression.
Conditions We Treat
Conditions Treated With Class IV Laser Therapy
Class IV laser therapy is used at The Chiropractic Doctors for 6 categories of injury and chronic pain, ranging from acute sports injuries to long-standing arthritis. Each condition below responds to the same underlying mechanism: faster cellular repair and reduced inflammation at the site of the pain.
Sports Injuries
Sprains, strains, tendinitis, and muscle tears heal faster when laser therapy increases cellular energy production and blood flow to the injured area.
Learn more →Peripheral Neuropathy
Laser therapy stimulates damaged peripheral nerves, reducing numbness, tingling, and burning sensations in the hands and feet.
Learn more →Chronic Pain
Patients with long-standing pain in the back, neck, shoulders, or hips often find relief when laser therapy is added to their care plan.
Plantar Fasciitis
Deep tissue laser reduces inflammation in the plantar fascia and promotes tissue repair, helping patients walk without pain.
Arthritis
Laser therapy decreases joint inflammation and stiffness, improving mobility for patients with osteoarthritis in the knees, hips, and hands.
Post-Surgical Healing
Accelerates recovery after orthopedic surgery by promoting tissue repair, reducing scar tissue formation, and managing pain without medication.
Your Session
What Does a Laser Therapy Session Feel Like?
You will sit or lie in a comfortable position while your doctor or a trained technician applies the laser handpiece to the treatment area. You will wear protective eyewear during the session. Most patients feel a gentle, soothing warmth as the laser energy penetrates the tissue. There is no pain, no needles, and no downtime. A typical session at our Grand Rapids office takes 5 to 15 minutes depending on the size and depth of the treatment area.
Many patients notice reduced pain and improved mobility after their very first session. However, the cumulative effect of multiple treatments produces the best long-term results. Dr. Phinney typically recommends six to twelve sessions scheduled two to three times per week. Patients from Cascade, Forest Hills, Kentwood, and the broader Grand Rapids area appreciate how quickly each visit fits into their schedule.
Common Questions
Laser Therapy FAQ
Does Class IV laser therapy hurt?
No. Most patients feel a gentle warming sensation during treatment. The laser penetrates deep into tissue without breaking the skin. Sessions at our Grand Rapids office are comfortable and relaxing.
How many laser therapy sessions will I need?
Most conditions respond within six to twelve sessions, typically scheduled two to three times per week. Chronic conditions may need additional visits. Dr. Phinney will outline the expected number of sessions at your first consultation.
Is Class IV laser therapy safe?
Yes. Class IV laser therapy is FDA-cleared and has been used in clinical settings for decades. Both the patient and the practitioner wear protective eyewear during treatment. There are no known long-term side effects.
What is the difference between Class IV and cold laser therapy?
Class IV lasers deliver significantly more power than Class III (cold) lasers. That higher power allows the light to penetrate deeper into tissue, reaching muscles, tendons, and joints that a cold laser cannot effectively treat. This makes Class IV therapy better suited for conditions like deep tissue injuries, neuropathy, and chronic joint pain.
